Kata course and grading

Posted by john barton on May 21, 2012 at 9:05 AM Comments comments (1)

The area  Kata course and grading attracted members from Brechin, Manchester, Newcastle and Kendal and was a great success. Saturday was a day for Nage and Katame no Kata training with many excellent displays from the seniors who were preparing themselves for the Sunday grading.

The usual Saturday evening meal was attended by 9 judoka, who all  surprisingly left before 10pm, no doubt with the Sunday grading in mind. Congratulations to Tracy on her promotion to 1st Kyu, Chris to 2nd Kyu, Frazer to 2 green tabs, and Luca to 1 blue tab. The day finished sitting in the sun at the nearby Near Boot Inn. Many thanks to Derek, Martin, Chris and Sylvia for their input and assistance.

Area grading and advanced judo course

Posted by john barton on December 7, 2011 at 11:55 AM Comments comments (0)

Members of our area are used to  travelling long distances to attend our area events. This reflects the large area that our clubs cover, from Brechin to Kendal.

Members who attended the event were treated to an advanced judo class from Sensei Dave Reveley 5th Dan, Dave is a 5 times world Kata Champion and has a brilliant knowledge of judo techniques. Everyone who attended the course enjoyed Sensei Dave's instruction having ample opportunity to learn new techniques. Many also attended the evening meal at a local restaurant.

Sunday saw some members working on there club coach awards. Congratulations go to Robert  Heaton on his promotion to 1st Kyu.

What kind of values will my child learn

Posted by john barton on August 2, 2011 at 7:50 PM Comments comments (1)

What kind of values will my child learn.

Medieval Knights were not just great fighters. They also tried to live by a code of behaviour called Chivalry. Japanese Samurai tried to live by a code of behaviour too. Their code was originally called Bushido, but today it is called Budo.

Outside of Japan, most martial arts ignore the code and concentrate on the fighting. Cumbria & The Borders Judo clubs however, believes that the real purpose of Judo is not to produce better fighters, but to produce better people. The code of Budo teaches respect, sincerity, and not to use your skills for wrongful purposes. We try to instil those kinds of values into all of our students.
